Building Resilience And Business Through Optimism And Action  – Above the Law

In
this
episode
of
“Be
That
Lawyer,”
I
sat
down
with
entrepreneur,
speaker,
and
growth-minded
leader
David
Schnurman.

We
explored
the
mindset
shifts,
personal
habits,
and
strategic
choices
that
have
helped
him
not
only
build
successful
businesses,
but
also
stay
grounded,
resilient,
and
emotionally
steady
through
life’s
curveballs.

Gratitude
Beats
Stress

David
believes
it’s
hard
to
feel
stressed
and
grateful
at
the
same
time,
and
he’s
right.

One
exercise
he
swears
by
is
going
21
days
without
complaining,
inspired
by
the
book
“A
Complaint-Free
World.”
Every
time
you
complain,
you
start
over.

Most
people
take
months
to
complete
the
challenge,
which
makes
you
realize
how
often
negativity
creeps
in.

By
consciously
avoiding
complaints,
especially
about
trivial
things
like
weather
or
traffic,
you
train
your
brain
to
focus
on
the
positive,
something
lawyers
under
pressure
can
benefit
from
immediately.

They
Are
Listening

One
of
life’s
greatest
accomplishments
doesn’t
come
from
business,
it
comes
from
fatherhood.

I
shared
the
quiet
satisfaction
of
hearing
my
son
repeat
back
a
life
lesson
I
thought
had
gone
unheard.
Like
many
parents,
we
often
wonder
if
anything
we
say
sticks.

But
every
so
often,
one
of
David’s
kids
will
echo
something
he’s
said,
and
it
hits
him:
They
are
listening.

Five
Compliments
a
Day

One
of
David’s
favorite
habits
is
deceptively
simple:
Give
five
authentic
compliments
every
day.

He
uses
a
pocket
trick,
start
with
five
pennies
in
one
pocket
and
move
them
after
each
compliment.
It’s
a
feel-good
practice
that
lowers
stress,
builds
connection,
and
boosts
your
own
mood.

Especially
in
high-stakes
environments
like
law,
this
practice
is
a
powerful
way
to
elevate
your
mindset
and
energy.

“If
you
compliment
somebody
else,
and
it’s
authentic,
it
helps
you
get
through
the
stress
of
the
wave,”
David
says.

Federal Judge Discloses Death Threats, Harassment Amid Toxic Rhetoric From Trump Administration – Above the Law

I’ve
been
on
the
bench
almost
15
years,
and
I
must
say
it’s
the
one
time
that
actually
shook
my
faith
in
the
judicial
system
and
the
rule
of
law.

I
didn’t
want
to
be
here.
It
took
me
a
long
time.
I’ve
never
spoken
about
what’s
happened
to
me
personally,
because
I’m
not
looking
for
pity.
I’m
not
looking
for
sympathy.
I
want
to
be
able
to
just
do
my
job
again.

U.S.
District
Judge

John
McConnell
Jr.

of

hosted
by

Speak
Up

Justice
,
where
he
spoke
of
receiving
an
angry
voicemail
where
the
caller
said
he
hoped
someone
would
assassinate
the
judge.
The
angry
voicemail
was
one
of
more
than
400
he’d
received
after
making
a
ruling
against
the
Trump
administration.
McConnell
has
since
received
six
credible
death
threats.
“I
don’t
know
that
the
public
understands
how
the
rule
of
law
and
the
independence
of
the
judiciary
is
so
violently
under
attack
like
I’m
not
sure
we’ve
ever
seen
in
this
country,”
he
said.
Without
specifically
mentioning
Trump,
judges
who
spoke
at
the
event
encouraged
U.S.
leaders
to
stop
“demonizing”
the
judiciary.

Why You Shouldn’t Use AI To Write Your Executive (Legal) Resume Or LinkedIn Profile – Above the Law

As
someone
who
writes
executive
resumes
on
a
weekly
basis
and
coaches
in-house
counsel
on
the
executive
job
search
process,
I’ve
quietly
watched
the
boom
in
AI-generated
resumes
sweep
across
the
job
search
market.
It
seemed
obvious
as
to
the
glaring
reasons
why
you
shouldn’t
use
AI
to
write
your
executive
(legal)
resume
or
LinkedIn
profile:
ethical
implications
of

inaccurate

and
already
published
information,
low-level
writing
and
boilerplate
generalizations,
and
the
repetitive
and
overused
jargon
that
AI
spits
back
out.
Yet,
it
wasn’t
until
I
recently
encountered
a
situation
of
AI-crafted
responses
by
an
executive
client
that
I
realized
it’s
time
to
shed
important
light
to
readers
of
my
column.

My
executive
clients
typically
haven’t
job
searched
in
a
decade
or
two.
Most
are
behind
the
times
on

marketing
themselves
strategically

because
they’ve
continuously
just
updated
that
archaic
resume
template
from
their
career
services
department
in
college
or
law
school.
These
executives
are
often
starting
from
ground
zero
in
their
job
search
with
no
factual
data
or
a
brag
book
of
achievements
kept
throughout
their
executive
career
trajectory.
Many
experience
brain
fatigue
when
dialing
back
through
their
career
history
trying
to
remember
specific
facts
and
examples
where
they’ve
shined.

A
few
weeks
ago,
I
had
an
executive
client
who
utilized
AI
to
respond
to
a
series
of
standard
questions
I
provide
clients
as
part
of
a
personal
inventory
to
obtain
more
details
of
their
career
trajectory
and
accomplishments.
As
I
read
through
the
responses,
they
seemed
robotic
and
generic,
yet
not
pointed
directly
to
this
client’s
experience.
It
was
clear
the
client
relied
on
ChatGPT
or
a
similar
AI
software
to
do
the
heavy
lifting.

I
also
quickly
realized
that
the
conversation
on
our
Zoom
coaching
call
flowed
differently
than
the
words
on
paper,
and
the
client’s
experience
didn’t
exactly
match
what
the
responses
detailed.
The
responses
to
the
questions
overlooked
the
more
intricate
pieces
of
this
client’s
executive-level
experience
which
made
him
a
truly
stand-out
candidate.
In
the
coaching
relationship,
being
transparent
with
clients
is
key.

I
explained
to
the
client
the
problem
with
relying
on
AI
to
provide
accurate
information
in
a
career
setting.
I
referred
back
to
the
examples
of
his
career
history
that
I
was
able
to
lift
out
of
him
by
pressing
further
on
questions
(and
follow-up
questions)
in
that
Zoom
coaching
call.
AI
never
provided
those
tidbits
of
important
information.
Had
I
relied
on
those
initial
responses
crafted
by
AI
provided
to
me
by
this
client,
his
story
would
have
been
a
complete
miss
in
both
his
resume
and
LinkedIn
profile.

While
I
think
AI
can
certainly
give
you
organized
packing
lists
for
bucket
list
trips
or
plan
out
terrific
trip
itineraries
for
dream
destinations,
I
do
believe
it
can
also
provide
a
framework
of
ideas
for
brainstorming
or
help
you
craft
the
outline
for
correspondence
when
you’ve
got
writer’s
block.
However,
relying
solely
on
AI
to
write
your
executive
resume/LinkedIn
profile
or
respond
to
an
executive
search
recruiter’s
questions
is
going
to
sink
your
career
faster
than
the
Titanic.
What
we’re
experiencing
now
is
the
same
problematic
situation
that
occurs
when
fluff,
hyperbole,
and
the
“keyword
stuffing”
section
of
30-plus
skills
replaces
actual
facts
and
evidence
in
a
client’s
resume.

AI
Is
Not
Human-Voice-Centric

When
you
pop
a
question
into
ChatGPT
or
another
AI
software,
it’s
culling
information
from
the
internet
and
utilizing
it
to
provide
a
generic
response,
without
fact-checking
it.
Since
I’ve
authored
numerous
articles
on

how
to
write
a
general
counsel
resume
,
AI
culls
some
of
that
information
when
prompting
it
with
a
question
regarding
the
skills
of
a

general
counsel
.
Yet,
the
information
is
basic
and
provides
zero
correlation
to
your
own
experience.
Remember,
your
LinkedIn
profile
is
public
and
forward-facing.
As
a
result,
and
not
surprisingly,
AI
also
takes
examples
of
general

counsel
LinkedIn
profiles

(many
of
which
I’ve
written
for
former
clients)
to
provide
that
responsive
information.

Thus,
by
relying
solely
on
AI,
you’re
merely
repurposing
existing
blanket
information,
not
the
kind
that’s
part
of
your

authentic
career
story
,

personal
brand
,
or
true
unique
value.
It’s
not
fact-centric.
It’s
giving
baseline
and
rudimentary
responses.
AI
is
not
showing
up
to
your
next

general
counsel
interview
,
where
you’ll
be
responding
to
very
specific
questions
that
request
detailed
scenarios
from
your
personal
first-hand
experience
(the
kind
that
ChatGPT
or
an
AI
chatbot
doesn’t
know
of).

AI
Is
No
Match
For
The
Discerning
Executive

You
simply
cannot
game
the
system
by
using
AI-generated
resumes
to
advance
in
the
hiring
process,
especially
at
the
executive
level.
Recruiters,
CEOs,
and
boards
can
read
between
the
lines.
And,
as
we’re
also
well
aware
of,

companies
are
using
technology
to
see
if
AI
wrote
the
resume,
not
you
.
AI
will
never
replace
the
human
voice
that’s
needed
in
the
boardroom,
standing
on
the
front
lines
of
the
company
crisis.

But
here’s
the
bigger
problem
beyond
the
ethical
implications
of
attempting
to
replace
AI-generated
resumes
with
human
voice
resumes:
if
you
can’t
answer
the
questions
off
the
cuff
in
that
interview,
and
you
don’t
match
the
person
illustrated
on
paper
(or
LinkedIn),
you’ve
now
just
blacklisted
yourself
from
future
opportunities
at
these
companies.
So,
why
even
go
down
that
road?
Why
take
the
easy
way
out
just
for
a
quick
first-pass?

For
the
companies,
hiring
teams,
and

executive
search
recruiters

reading
this
article,
continue
to
think
about
how
to
separate
stand-out
candidates
in
the
sea
of
AI
mishmash

a
world
that’s
now
combatting
between
the
rote
checklists
of
skills
from
the
actual
experiences
and
battlegrounds
that
define
that
next
ideal
general
counsel
or
CEO.

What
do
you
think
the
legal
tech
industry
is
doing
well?
And
what
might
it
be
missing?

Although
legal
tech
evolves
at
an
astonishing
pace,
actual
adoption
of
most
available
technology
is
much
lower
than
would
be
expected
given
the
investment.

Lawyers
consistently
give
their
firm’s
training
programs
mediocre
or
poor
ratings,
and
the
onboarding
of
new
hires
and
laterals
needs
real
transformation.

Traveling
Coaches
believes
the
secret
ingredient
in
harnessing
technology
for
the
maximum
benefit
of
the
whole
firm
is
to
focus
on
the
individual
employee
and
practice
groups.
When
the
training
experience
is
relevant,
engaging
and
effective,
firms
develop
a
culture
of
learning.

This
culture
of
learning
promotes
inquiry,
flexibility
and
the
acceptance
of
change
which
accelerates
the
adoption
of
new
products
and
new
processes.

What’s
one
thing
lawyers
can
do
to
be
more
tech
savvy?

Embrace
new
work
methods
and
pursue
appropriate
training
to
stay
ahead.

Consult
experts
such
as
Traveling
Coaches
to

specific
learning
paths
that
sharpen
your
performance.
Gaining
pertinent
technology
skills
such
as
using
AI-powered
tools
or
document
automation
software
enhances
efficiency
and
improves
work-life
balance,
allowing
you
to
focus
on
higher-value
activities.

And

The Law Schools With The Best Professors (2025) – Above the Law

If
you’re
considering
applying
to
law
school,
you
obviously
want
to
attend
the
best
one
you’re
able
to
get
into,
but
another
one
of
the
things
you
may
want
to
consider
in
your
search
is
finding
a
school
where
the
professors
are
truly
masters
of
their
craft,
the
law
schools
with
the
best
professors,
as
ranked
by
current
law
students.

As
our
readers
know,
the
latest
Princeton
Review
law
school
rankings
are
out,
and
today,
we’ll
focus
on
a
category
that’s
important
for
students
who
are
looking
for
the
very
best
education
possible:
The
law
schools
with
the
best
professors.

Which
schools
do
you
think
rose
to
the
top
of
this
ranking?

First,
we’ll
begin
with
the
methodology
Princeton
Review
used
to
determine
which
law
schools
have
the
best
professors.
This
ranking
was
based
on
student
opinions
on
how
well
their
professors
teach
and
their
accessibility
outside
the
classroom.

Per Princeton
Review
,
these
are
the
law
schools
with
the
best
professors:

  1. University
    of
    Virginia
    School
    of
    Law
    (no
    change)
  2. Duke
    University
    School
    of
    Law
    (ranked
    #3
    last
    year)
  3. Vanderbilt
    University
    Law
    School
    (ranked
    #4
    last
    year)
  4. University
    of
    Notre
    Dame
    Law
    School
    (ranked
    #5
    last
    year)
  5. University
    of
    Chicago
    Law
    School
    (ranked
    #2
    last
    year)
  6. Florida
    State
    University
    College
    of
    Law
    (no
    change)
  7. University
    of
    Michigan
    Law
    School
    (ranked
    #10
    last
    year)
  8. Stanford
    University
    School
    of
    Law
    (ranked
    #7
    last
    year)
  9. UCLA
    School
    of
    Law
    (no
    change)
  10. University
    of
    Georgia
    School
    of
    Law
    (ranked
    #8
    last
    year)

Did
your
law
school
make
the
cut?
If
it
did,
do
you
think
it
was
ranked
fairly?
If
it
didn’t
make
the
list
for
the
best
professors,
do
you
agree
with
that
assessment?

Trump Administration Says It’s Going To Start Locking Up Homeless People – Above the Law

‘I
won’t
let
people
forget
either!’

We’ve
finally
got
a
Stalin
to
call
our
own.
Just
like
Soviet
Russia,
homelessness
is
now
basically
a
criminal
offense,
thanks
to
Trump’s
latest
executive
order,
which
pretends
it’s
about
crime
but
actually
just
wants
to
put
homelessness
people
in
places
where
other
Americans
won’t
be
inconvenienced
by
them.

Like
most
Trump
executive
orders, it’s
got
Orwell
all
over
it
:

“Ending
Crime
And
Disorder
On
America’s
Streets”

What’s
the
crime
and
disorder
so
troubling
it
needs
yet
another
executive
order
that
further
expands
the
power
of
US
law
enforcement
past
the
troubling
amount
it
already
possesses?
Tough
to
say,
since
it’s
the
president
saying
it,
and
he’s
never
been
great
with
words.
Even
with
ghostwriters,
this
is
barely
coherent:

Endemic
vagrancy,
disorderly
behavior,
sudden
confrontations,
and
violent
attacks
have
made
our
cities
unsafe.
The
number
of
individuals
living
on
the
streets
in
the
United
States
on
a
single
night
during
the
last
year
of
the
previous
administration

274,224

was
the
highest
ever
recorded.
The
overwhelming
majority
of
these
individuals
are
addicted
to
drugs,
have
a
mental
health
condition,
or
both.
Nearly
two-thirds
of
homeless
individuals
report
having
regularly
used
hard
drugs
like
methamphetamines,
cocaine,
or
opioids
in
their
lifetimes.
An
equally
large
share
of
homeless
individuals
reported
suffering
from
mental
health
conditions.
 The
Federal
Government
and
the
States
have
spent
tens
of
billions
of
dollars
on
failed
programs
that
address
homelessness
but
not
its
root
causes,
leaving
other
citizens
vulnerable
to
public
safety
threats.

Yep.
Drink
that
all
in.
DID
YOU
VOTE
FOR
THIS,
REGRETFUL
TRUMP
VOTERS?

The
first
sentence
does
a
lot
of
conflation
in
service
of
the
ultimate
goal.
It
also
does
the
usual
bloodlust
thing
where
it
pretends
US
crime
rates
are
the
worst
they’ve
ever
been
while
not-so-slyly
insinuating
the
(made-up)
crime
problem
is
the
result
of
too much compassion
towards
the
less-fortunate.

The
conflation
is
followed
by
stats
that
aren’t
supported
by
any
citations.
And
that’s
followed
by
two
compounded
assertions
(again,
without
citations
to
supporting
facts)
that
most
homeless
people
are
both
(1)
addicted
to
hard
drugs,
and
(2)
suffering
from
mental
health
conditions.

The
final
claim
is
the
lousiest,
at
least
in
this
context.
Trump
claims
the
government
has
wasted
billions
of
dollars
trying
to
“address”
homelessness
while
never
bothering
to
examine
the
root
causes.
Trump
expects
you
to
just
sort
of
ride
that
wave
of
bullshit
into
the
next
paragraph

one
that
reveals
Trump
will
also
spend
billions
of
dollars
without
addressing
the
root
causes
of
homelessness!

Brace
yourself.
It
gets
ugly
almost
immediately.

Shifting
homeless
individuals
into
long-term
institutional
settings
for
humane
treatment
through
the
appropriate
use
of
civil
commitment
will
restore
public
order.
Surrendering
our
cities
and
citizens
to
disorder
and
fear
is
neither
compassionate
to
the
homeless
nor
other
citizens.
My
Administration
will
take
a
new
approach
focused
on
protecting
public
safety.

Hell
yeah,
we’re
bringing
back
involuntary
commitment!
(Maybe
the
draft
will
be
next!)
It’s
time
to exhume
John
Kellogg
 and
see
if
he
can’t
enema
the
homelessness
out
of
the
homeless.
Or,
more
likely,
we’ll
just
see
whether
it’s
possible
to torture the
homeless
out
of
people
in
federal
institutions
that
are
only
indistinguishable
from
prisons
by
the
orderlies’
willingness
to
be even more
inhumane
 than
the
average
screw.

It’s
clear
Trump
prefers
the
indefinite
discomfort
of
the
unhoused
to
the
momentary
“disorder
and
fear”
he
claims
routinely
bother
citizens
who
actually
have
houses
and
acceptable
levels
of
substance
abuse.
It’s
unclear
where
all
of
these
unhoused
people
will
be
forcibly
housed
because
the
man
who
laid
the
groundwork
for
this
hateful
brand
of
conservatism
basically burned
that
system
to
the
ground
 during
his
eight
years
in
office.

(Trust
me,
there
are
also
a
lot
of
eugenics
enthusiasts
behind
this
resurrection
of
forcible
commitment
because
throwing
“subpar”
humans
into
inhumane
circumstances
has
always
put
the
lead
in
their
pencil.
This
administration
has
no
shortage
of
people
with
a
head
full
of
bad
wiring
willing
to
push
people
out
the
Overton
window
for
the
next
four
years,
knowing
there’s
a
pardon
in
their
future
if
they
happen
to
go a
bit
too
Special-K
 during
this
particular
purge.)

First
against
the
wall
en
route
to
the
padded
room:

(i)
   enforce
prohibitions
on
open
illicit
drug
use;

(ii)
  enforce
prohibitions
on
urban
camping
and
loitering;

(iii)
 enforce
prohibitions
on
urban
squatting;

Legalize
weed
all
you
want
but
it’s
still
a
federal
crime,
so
get
used
to
being
abused,
pot
smokers
who
look
possibly
unable
to
pay
rent.
As
to
anyone
else
not
fortunate
enough
to
have
a
roof
over
your
head,
you’ll
soon
have
one,
even
though
it
won’t
actually
be
anyplace
anyone
would
willingly
call
“home.”

This
is
just
ground
work,
which
is
ghastly
considering
how
awful
it
already
is.
There’s
an
undercurrent
that
suggests
anyone
not
living
in
the
way
the
Trump
government
wants
them
to
probably
has
mental
health
issues.
Nothing
in
this
order
suggests
the
erection
of
affordable
multi-family
housing
might
reduce
homelessness.
Nothing
in
the
order
suggests
expanding
the
social
service
safety
net
might
prevent
more
people
from
becoming
homeless.
That
vacuum
is
instead
filled
with
presumptions
about
the
inherent
dangerousness
of
homeless
people,
which
allows
the
administration
to
justify
them
being
detained
en
masse
and
tossed
into
whatever
federal
institution
is
still
semi-operable.

The
only
mention
of
funds
being
allocated
are
directed
solely
towards”removal”
efforts
targeting
homeless
people.
The
only
mention
of
addressing
mental
health
issues
is
a
series
of
restrictions
that
threaten
to
remove
even more funding
from
existing
social
programs
if
they
can’t
demonstrate
(using
getting-set-up-for-failure
metrics)
what
they
do
actually
reduces
homelessness.

Most
specifically,
the
administration
says
there
will
be no additional
funds
allocated
for
actually
providing
housing
for
people
currently
without
homes.

These
actions
shall
include,
to
the
extent
permitted
by
law,
ending
support
for
“housing
first”
policies
that
deprioritize
accountability
and
fail
to
promote
treatment,
recovery,
and
self-sufficiency
.

“Pull
yourself
up
by
your
bootstraps,”
says
the
Trump
administration,
which
first
takes
your
boots
because
you’re
probably
just
using
them
to
stash
drugs
and
then
your
bootstraps
because
you
might
try
to
hang
yourself
with
them.

Now
that
Trump
has
decided
it’s
okay
to
lock
up
the
homeless
for
being
homeless
while
pretending
it’s
all
about
providing
(forcibly
applied)
mental
health
care,
it’s
only
a
matter
of
time
before
he
moves
on
to
the
rest
of
the
people
he
thinks
are
sick
in
the
head,
ranging
from
transgender
people
seeking
psychiatric
assistance
to
political
opponents
he
routinely
publicly
disparages
as
insane,
stupid,
or
otherwise
mentally
deficient.

This
is
undiluted
evil
from
an
administration
that’s
no
longer
even
willing
to
pretend
its
ultimate
goal
is
to
secure
their
existence
and
a
future
for
whatever
children

the
instrument
of
ratification
of
the
Convention.
Following
this
deposit
and
in
accordance
with
its
Article
28,
the
Convention
will
enter
into
force
for
Madagascar
on
1
November
2025.

The
Convention
enables
jurisdictions
to
engage
in
a
wide
range
of
mutual
assistance
in
tax
matters:
exchange
of
information
on
request,
spontaneous
exchange,
automatic
exchange,
tax
examinations
abroad,
simultaneous
tax
examinations
and
assistance
in
tax
collection.
It
guarantees
extensive
safeguards
for
the
protection
of
taxpayers’
rights.

The
Convention
is
the
primary
instrument
for
the
swift
implementation
of
the Standard
for
Automatic
Exchange
of
Financial
Account
Information
in
Tax
Matters
 (the
Common
Reporting
Standard
or
CRS).
The
CRS,
developed
by
the
OECD
and
G20
countries,
enables
more
than
125
jurisdictions
to
automatically
exchange
offshore
financial
account
information.

Beyond
the
exchange
of
information
on
request
and
the
automatic
exchange
pursuant
to
the
Standard,
the
Convention
is
also
a
powerful
tool
in
the
fight
against
illicit
financial
flows
and
is
a
key
instrument
for
the
implementation
of
the
transparency
standards
of
the OECD/G20
Base
Erosion
and
Profit
Shifting
(BEPS)
Project

Emmerson Mnangagwa’s online stormtroopers target women who speak out

Zimbabwe’s
brutal
regime,
under
President
Emmerson
Mnangagwa,
is
using
social
media,
particularly
X,
to
smear
and
silence
mostly
female
anti-government
political
activists
and
human
rights
defenders
in
the
country.

President
Mnangagwa’s
army
of
paid
pro-government
social
media
trolls
is
known
as
the Varakashi —propaganda
stormtroopers—with
some
using
names
of
prominent
people
to
open
fake
X
accounts
without
their
knowledge.
One
ghost X
account
uses
 the
name
of
Zimbabwe’s
former
vice
president,
Joice
Mujuru.
Even
President
Mnangagwa’s
spokesperson,
George
Charamba—who
is
also
a
senior
government
employee
—runs
two
toxic
ghost
X
accounts—@Jamwanda2 and @dhonzamusoro007—which
he
uses
to
attack
and
post
completely
fabricated
and
malicious
information
about
female
human
rights
defenders
and
political
activists
in
Zimbabwe.
The
first
of
these
accounts
was suspended
in
2022
 but
was
reinstated
after
Elon
Musk
acquired
Twitter
and
renamed
it
X.

In
the
past
year
there
has
been
a
proliferation
of
toxic
X
accounts
in
the
country
and
they
are
flourishing.
At
times,
these
X
accounts
incite
physical
and
sexual
violence
against
female
political
and
human
rights
activists.
In
one
post,
a
ghost
X
account
threatened
a
prominent
human
rights
activist
that
“[I’m]
waiting
to
rape
you.”
The
post
drew
outrage
from
X
users,
and
it
was
later
deleted.

And
in
study
published
in
2023
,
Constance
Kasiyamhuru
from
the
University
of
Johannesburg
in
South
Africa
said
the
Varakashi
in
Zimbabwe
operate
mostly
on
Twitter/X
to
“shut
down”
the
political
opponents
of
the
governing
Zanu
PF
party.

“Through
trolling,
name-calling,
threats,
mocking,
mobbing,
labelling,
ridicule,
casting
aspersions,
delegitimation,
disinforming,
and
other
strategies,
Varakashi
seek
to
regulate,
censure,
and
‘discipline’
anti-musangano [anti-ruling
party]
online
discourse,”
Kasiyamhuru
wrote.

Tendai
Ruben
Mbofana,
a
Zimbabwe
based
social
justice
advocate
and
writer,
said
the
systematic
deployment
of
online
trolls—particularly
targeting
female
human
rights
defenders
and
political
activists—has
become
a
chilling
hallmark
of
repression
in
Zimbabwe.

“These
smear
campaigns
are
not
just
personal
attacks;
they
are
part
of
a
broader
strategy
to
delegitimise
our
work,
intimidate
us
into
silence,
and
discredit
our
credibility
in
the
eyes
of
the
public,”
Mbofana
said.

He
added
that
the
abuse
often
takes
on
a
deeply
misogynistic
tone,
laced
with
gendered
insults,
threats
of
sexual
violence,
and
false
accusations
designed
to
shame
and
isolate
women.

“It
creates
a
climate
of
fear
and
forces
many
women
out
of
digital
spaces
that
should
otherwise
be
used
to
amplify
their
voices
and
advocacy,”
he
said.

Sophia
Gwasira,
who
was
elected
as
the
first
female
mayor
for
Mutare
City
in
eastern
Zimbabwe
in
August
2023,
told
Index
on
Censorship
that
the
fear
of
being
smeared
and
attacked
on
social
media
platforms
by
Zanu
PF
social
media
trolls
was
forcing
many
women
to
abandon
opposition
politics
and
activism.
She
said
social
media
platforms
were
no
longer
safe
places
for
women
in
opposition
politics
in
Zimbabwe,
with
the
attackes
affecting
both
them
and
their
families.

“It’s
affecting
us
not
only
physically
but
emotionally
too.
We
are
trying
to
find
ways
of
countering
these
attacks.
But
currently
we
don’t
have
any
protection
from
our
own
political
parties
or
from
the
government,”
Gwasira
said.

But
Gwasira
said
she
will
continue
to
fight
for
the
people
and,
given
the
opportunity,
she
would
contest
the
general
elections
slated
for
2028.
Gwasira
and
many
other
opposition
mayors,
MPs
and
councillors
were
recalled
in
late
2023
after
her
party,
the
Citizens
Coalition
for
Change
(CCC) was
hijacked
 by
President
Mnangagwa’s
ruling
party
Zanu
PF
through
its
proxy,
Sengezo
Tshabangu.
This
forced
the
CCC
leader
Nelson
Chamisa
to abandon
the
opposition
 party
and
he
took
a
sabbatical
from
party
politics
in
January
2024.

Promise
Mkwananzi,
spokesperson
for
opposition
party
Citizens
Coalition
for
Change—which
is
still
loyal
to
former
leader
Nelson
Chamisa—
told
Index
on
Censorship
that
as
opposition,
they
have
been
identifying
and
exposing
some
of
these
social
media
ghost
accounts
and
to
direct
their
members
to
counter
the
toxic
narratives
on
X.

“It
must
be
noted
also
that
these
trolls
are
paid
using
taxpayers’
money
to
denigrate
women
and
bully
voices
of
the
alternative
on
social
media,”
Mkwananzi
said.

But
Mkwananzi
was
quick
to
add
that
his
party
will
continue
to
fight
and
mobilise
people
for
a
better
Zimbabwe.

“We
are
also
educating
our
members
to
be
strong
and
to
remain
focused
on
recruiting
mobilising,
educating
and
radicalising
the
base.”

Although
women
are
the
main
target,
men
critical
of
the
ruling
party
are
also
targeted.

“In
my
own
experience,
I
have
faced
repeated,
coordinated
attacks
on
X,
particularly
from
anonymous
accounts
believed
to
be
run
or
supported
by
high-ranking
government
officials,
including
the
president’s
spokesperson.
These
attacks
are
aimed
at
silencing
dissent
and
discouraging
public
engagement.
But
we
will
not
be
silenced.
If
anything,
these
attacks
only
reinforce
the
urgency
of
our
work,”
said
Tendai
Ruben
Mbofana.

When
President
Mnangagwa seized
power
 through
a
military
coup
from
Zimbabwe’s
long-time
dictator,
Robert
Mugabe
in
2017,
President
Mnangagwa
promised
sweeping
reforms;
economic
and
political
reforms,
including
upholding
human
rights
and
rule
of
law
in
the
country.

However,
Zimbabwe
has
become
worse
under
President
Mnangagwa
than
Mugabe;
political
opponents
to
Zanu
PF
have
been
brutalised, tortured and killed and
corruption
is
widespread.

A
recent
report
 by
Human
Rights
Watch
said
authorities
in
Zimbabwe
have
continued
to
restrict
civic
space
and
the
rights
to
freedom
of
expression,
association,
and
peaceful
assembly
and
the
human
rights,
political
and
economic
situation
in
Zimbabwe
continues
to
deteriorate.

Under
the
current
constitution,
President
Mnangagwa’s
term
of
office—his
second
and
last
term—ends
in
2028
but
his
party
is
now
planning
to
amend
the
constitution
to
keep
him
in
office
till
2030.
Meanwhile,
Mnangagwa’s
Varakashi
are
flooding
social
media
with
messages
in
support
of
the
extension
of
his
term
and
touting
his
“achievements”
so
far.
